Somewhere on the backroads between Georgia and South Carolina, I caught a glimpse of a lot of “white” out of my peripheral vision. I had to travel about a half mile before I was able to turn around and pull off the side of the road. I was thrilled to stumble across the rookery. I counted about 100 egrets in the area. I hated to leave. But! I noticed a couple of days later, after downloading the photos … the wood stork standing back to back with the egret and another sitting in the nest. I didn’t even notice him while standing there. A real treat.

My first, but, not my last visit to Huntley Meadows. Huntley Meadows Park is over 1500 acres of land and 1/2 miles of wetland boardwalks located in Northern Virginia, just off of Route 1. A great birding spot — with over 200 species identified in the park. 🙂

Conowingo Dam is a large hydroelectric dam in the lower Susquehanna River and it just happens to be one of the best places to see the American Bald Eagle east of the Mississippi River. The dam holds a special interest for me, because my grandfather and uncle left southwest Virginia in the late 1920s to find work on the dam. Once they found the work to be steady, the rest of the family moved north. And that’s how some of the Lark’s got from Russell County, Virginia to Carroll County, Maryland. Last week was my first attempt to photograph our National Bird. They soared, they swooped, they fished and I loved it — My camera(s) and I will be back soon!
